Trademark Law Update
The Houston Intellectual Property Law Association and University of Houston Law Center’s 33rd Annual Fall Institute on Intellectual Property Law is being held October 5-7, 2017 at the Moody Gardens hotel in Galveston, Texas. HIPLA has put on the Fall Institute in association with the University of Houston for the past thirty-three years. Pirkey Barber Adds Two New Associates, David E. Armendariz and Danae Robinson
Pirkey Barber PLLC is pleased to announce that attorneys David E. Armendariz and Danae Robinson have joined the firm as Associates.
Mr. Armendariz’s practice will focus on trademark and copyright law, specializing primarily in litigation and policing. He joins Pirkey Barber from the Austin office of Vinson & Elkins where he practiced appellate law and civil commercial litigation for four years. Before entering private practice, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Debra H. Lehrmann on the Supreme Court of Texas.
Mr. Armendariz graduated with High Honors from The University of Texas School of Law in 2012, where he was a member of the Chancellors honor society. He also served as an Articles Editor on the Texas Law Review and was a member of the Order of the Coif.
Danae Robinson* earned her J.D. from the University of San Francisco School of Law, where she was a member of the McAuliffe Honor Society. She was also a member of the Intellectual Property and Cyber Law Association. Prior to law school, Ms. Robinson received her Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering in 2013 from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Ms. Robinson will also practice trademark and unfair competition law, including a focus on internet and social media issues.

Jered Matthysse Elected to Texas Bar Foundation
Pirkey Barber Member Jered E. Matthysse has been elected to membership in the Fellows of the Texas Bar Foundation in recognition of his outstanding professional achievement and demonstrated commitment to the improvement of the Texas justice system.
Founded in 1965, the Texas Bar Foundation is the largest charitably funded bar foundation in the country and has distributed more than $17 million to assist nonprofit organizations throughout Texas with justice related programs and services.

Anna Kuhn Included in the 2017 Top 250 Women in IP by Managing Intellectual Property
Pirkey Barber Senior Counsel Anna Kuhn was recently honored with inclusion in the 2017 edition of IP STARS Top 250 Women in IP. This is the second consecutive year that Ms. Kuhn has been included in this prestigious list. The annual list recognizes female IP practitioners in private practice who have performed exceptionally for their clients and firms in the past year.
Ms. Kuhn joined Pirkey Barber earlier this year, and we are proud to have her on our team.

Since 1996 the publication has identified the top legal practitioners in business law based on peer and client nominations along with rigorous independent research and attorney interviews. The 200 to 600 lawyers selected each year are considered the pre-eminent attorneys in their respective fields.
Travis Wimberly Recognized in the 2017 Texas “Rising Stars” list by Super Lawyers®, a Thomson Reuters Service
Super Lawyers Magazine®, a Thomson Reuters service, recently named Associate Travis Wimberly as a “Texas Rising Star” in the Intellectual Property and Business Litigation categories.
Super Lawyers® identifies outstanding lawyers who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. The selection process is multi-phased and includes independent research, peer nominations, and peer evaluations. No more than 2.5 percent of attorneys are selected as Rising Stars. To qualify, candidates must be under 40 or in practice less than 10 years.
Travis practices trademark and copyright law. He advises clients on building their IP portfolios, developing enforcement strategies, and policing of infringements. Travis represents clients in contentious matters before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office and federal courts throughout the country. He also handles licensing and other IP-related contracts and negotiations for his clients.
His experience includes four years with Vinson & Elkins LLP. Before entering private practice, Travis served as a law clerk to the Honorable Richard C. Tallman on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Travis earned his J.D. with High Honors from The University of Texas School of Law, where he was Keeper of the Peregrinus for the Chancellors, awarded for having the fourth-highest grade-point average after second year. Travis also served as an Articles Editor on the Texas Law Review and was a member of the Order of the Coif. Before law school, Travis graduated with Highest Honors from the University of Texas at Austin, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Radio-Television-Film.
